I’m trying to help out an elderly neighbor with his washing machine.
The machine refuses to spin and drain unless I hold down the lid switch with a screw driver. The plastic part on the lid that depresses the lid switch dosen’t do it’s job. Why does it work when I use a screw driver but not when the lid is down? It does go through the wash cycle with the lid closed but when it gets to the spin cycle it stops.
Would appreciste any feed back.
The lid switch mechanism is broken, so that plastic lip that the plunger on the lid pushes to activate the switch is not moving enough to close the lid switch. When you insert the screw driver you are moving it more than the plastic plunger does, so it drains and spins.
Replace the lid switch and the machine should be up and running and you can congratulate yourself on being a really nice person to help your neighbor. Here is the part.
and here is site that will show you how to get the cabinet off to do it. Your model number is coming up as a Whirlpool, so I assume that is what you have.

Congratulations go to you all for such quick and thorough replies. I very much appreciate it and I’ll see what I can do! BTW: It is a whirlpool washer.
Sid,
It took less than an hour to make the repairs on this machine. Not bad for a novice repairman like me, lol.
Your instructions were easy to follow and my neighbors are happy. I might add, my neighbors are in their late 80’s so you can imagine how dependent they have to be sometime and were most grateful for your help.
