Washer won’t agitate

Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: WTW5100VQ0
Main Symptom: won’t agitate clothes
What happens & when: will spin clothes dry but doesn’t agitate, sounds louder than normal when attempting to agitate clothes

Error Code (if any): none
Parts or tests already tried: cam agitator repair kit

I’d suspect something going on with the basket drive AP5985817 or the clutch assembly AP3094537 not allowing the clutch to disengage for agitation. That louder than normal sound is probably the unit trying to agitate the entire tub instead of just the agitator.

Is there a way to test either of those to see which one is the culprit? Or would I be able to see the problem if I turned the washer on its back?

It’d probably be best to lay the washer down and take a look at those parts, look for springs and hinge points that are worn or heavily rusted. Most likely just the clutch, but it is worth looking at that basket drive as well.

I’m not seeing anything that looks too worn or broken.

The pads on the drive and the clutch are worn, that’ll cause stuff like this. Looks like the c-clip for the clutch is also worn which will cause those pads to wear faster. I’m thinking you’re gonna need clutch and basket drive. The basket drive comes with a new c-clip and some other hardware.

Ok. I’ll order those parts. Is there anything else I should look at replacing while I’m this deep into it?

Is there anyway to make sure it’s not i the transmission as well?

If it is spinning well then it isn’t the transmission on this model.

Ok. I was told washer transmissions have two gear sets, one that spins the drum and one that agitates.

It is possible, just doesn’t happen very often with these. You can check to see if the entire tub is moving when agitation kicks in, if you’re getting nothing at all then your gearcase would be something to look at.

Usually it is the other way around with the gearcase, agitation but no spin.

The tub doesn’t move when it’s supposed to be agitating.

Ah, my bad, I thought it was for some reason. Gearcase is definitely something to look at. Sorry about that.

Would it be suitable to just change the transmission or does the clutch and basket drive need to be changed as well?

The pads on the clutch and basket drive are pretty worn, as well as that c-clip, if they aren’t a problem no they will be sooner rather than later.

Ok. Thank you for your help.
