Washer will randomly not spin out clothes, however, the cycle does complete

Brand:Kenmore
**Model Number:**110.92274100
Main Symptom:Spin cycle won’t engage
What happens & when:

Washer will randomly not spin out clothes, however, the cycle does complete.
It will run 3-4 loads without issue, and it runs very well otherwise.
They are all run on the Normal cycle. Loads are basically the same size small to medium. Note the normal cycle was almost used exclusively throughout its history.
It does make a slightly different noise when it doesn’t spin.
If we lift the lid, we can see it not spinning and then we can see the tub “release” free and when we close the lid, it spins out as expected.
This washer has been on a recent repair journey.
It started Jan 12, 2026 when it stopped working. Initially stopped at spin cycle and restarted the load and would not agitate.
Since then we replaced (in order)
Motor Coupler (Basically gone, small bit of rubber part and all legs broken)
Agitator dogs
Clutch (w/ Blue Spring)
Sound dampening ring
Transmission
Motor
Capacitor
Water Pump
Basket Drive
Drive Block
CenterPost Gasket
Thrust washer
Suspension Pads(both sets)
Washer Suspension Spring (WPW10250667)
And lastly the Lid Switch

Thanks for any help you could offer.

Direct-drive washers are some of the most reliable machines made. The issue you’re experiencing is caused by the timer not pausing after the pump-out cycle.

For the transmission to engage and spin the basket, the motor must briefly stop. These washers use a neutral drain system, meaning the transmission is turning internally while the water drains, but it won’t engage the spin until the motor stops momentarily.

Since the timer isn’t stopping the motor as it should, the transmission never shifts into spin. When you lift the lid, it interrupts power to the motor, effectively doing what the timer should have done. Closing the lid then allows the transmission to engage and begin spinning.

Solution: Replace the timer. WP661597 Washer Timer | Genuine Whirlpool OEM In Stock

Thank you so much for the quick reply.

We were leaning towards it being the timer (it is basically the last part left  )

It is so helpful to have the explanation of how it operates and confirmation.

We will get it replaced and let you know how we make out.

Thanks again!

After replacing the timer 5 loads ran as expected with spin cycles engaging. The sixth load had the issue.
When the load drained after wash, there was a significant pause (motor stopped) before moving to spin cycle but the spin did not engage, had to lift lid, saw the tub ‘release’ free, closed lid and the spin engaged. After the rinse drain the spin engaged as expected. We are at a loss for what could be the issue. And at this point we really don’t want to give up on it, but need it to work reliably.
