Washer fills, then you can hear the motor start and run, but the agitator does not move. Took the agitator off and the shaft isnt turning at all. When I put it in the spin mode it works fine. I took it apart and looked at the clutch and it appeared to still have pads on it, so I’m assuming its ok also.
The clutch has no function in agitation mode, the agitator shaft is driven directly by the gearcase. Remove the motor and rotate gearcase input shaft by hand CCW. If no movement of agitator shaft, then the gearcase is bad. If it does work, check the motor coupler. Usually when they fail, the washer won’t agitate or spin but sometimes a certain type of coupler failure can cause only one function to fail.

Thanks, the coupler is ok (it has the single piece rubber), when I turn the motor, the transmission output shaft does not move at all. Does it use different gears for the spin cycle?
Yes. If you have good mechanical skills, you can take the gearcase apart and find the problem, most parts are available, or just replace the gearcase.

I heard the gearcases are a nightmare to repair. I’m fixing this for a woman that doesnt have a lot of money, so replacing it is not in the budget. Thanks for your help!!
Well, if you know the inner workings of the gearcase, it’s easy to repair. Nothing difficult about it, no special tools required other than snap ring pliers. Never heard of this gearcase being a nightmare to repair.

Thanks for your help Eric, going to see if I can find a used gearcase online.
