Washer thumping during the spin cycle

Main Symptom: Thumping during spin
What happens & when: When the washer is in spin there is a thumping sound. It almost sounds like a slapping sound. It will increase the speed . The sound gets louder when I go to the bottom of the washer.

Error Code (if any):
Parts or tests already tried: I have removed the inner tub and ran the washer without the tub. The washer will not increase in speed during the spin.

If the washer does not make the sound when the basket is out, it has to be something in the gearcase and clutch. I have heard them thump when the drive basket and tub nut were loose.
