My washing machine at first stop dispensing any cold water and would only give hot waTER. aFTER TRYING IT TWICE SMOKE CAME FROM THE BACK AND NOW NO WATER COMEs OUT. iT WILL STILL RUN ON THE SPIN CYLE. Was thinking it"s the water inlet valve. Any suggestions?

It could be the valve.
You will have to remove it and check it. Since it smoked you should be able to see the damage or smell the smoke residue on the part.
I am assuming you saw smoke at the top back of the unit so I would also check fro a bad wire or timer in that area.
