Today, our washing machine overfilled. Once we got the water picked up, I started to troubleshoot the washer. This is what i’ve observed: machine overfills on large load. It will shut off on anything less than 3/4 of water capacity on the dial. But what is weird is at 1/2 capacity or medium load the water level is more like 3/4. Any help is greatly appreciated!
There’s probably a leak somewhere in the water level (pressure) switch. Disconnect the tube from the switch to the tub, on both ends. Put your finger over the end that connects to the tub and blow into the other end. If you hear air coming out of the tube, replace it. If you don’t hear any air, the problem may be in the switch itself. Some of them have adjustment set screws, but the process can be lengthy and frustrating. May be best just to replace the switch.
Today I downloaded a free service manual for my washing machine. Disconnected the tube from the bottom of the washer. Put my finger on the bottom and blew into it-no leaks. I’m assuming now that it must be the water pressure level switch. I’m also wondering if I shouldn’t replace the water mixing valve. I keep thinking how lucky we were to catch the machine overfilling. I hate to think of flooding the house with a finished basement if this were to go next. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
A quick way to test the water inlet valve is to set the machine in any fill cycle. While the machine is filling, unplug it. If it continues to fill, shut off the water at the ource and replace the valve.
