Washer leaving brown streak on clothes

In every load of clothes I am finding brown streaks of 2 to 4 inches long, and little more than a pencil line wide. I have checked out everything I can think of, and have not found the source. I have checked the drum, and found nothing. I replaced the drum baffle gasket, thinking, maybe the mildew from the old one was being transfered, not the problem. Whirlpool has been no help, they just want me to spend my money on having a service call, so that he can tell me that he has no idea what is causing the problem.
I need help! any ideas?

Gosh, we can tell you we have no idea either and it won’t cost you the price of a service call, and unfortunately we probably do not have a good idea.

I can only think that some grease has gotten into the drum that is not visible. I would take off the top and back and see if there is anything on the outside of the tub, and then take some good degreaser and go all thorugh the inside. I would then operate it with the hot water on, the right dose of HE detergent but no clothes inside for at least one cycle.

If that does not fix things you are looking at a major teardown.

That’s all I got, hope it helps.

Turn the spin basket, if you feel bearings, you have a bad rear shell seal leaking, a major and costly job. Check your warranty, might be covered, just carefully check the back pulley area to confirm, if not bearings, you will just waste money on a service call.

I have found that most of the time when thin brown lines are found on the clothing, the drum seals on the dryer are to blame. You see, when the drum seals get too much slack in them from wear, the clothing will get “pinched” between the drum and the bulkhead as the drum turns around, and the result is the brown marks or streaks. This can sometimes be corrected by replacing the seals only and sometimes the drum rollers and/or support bearing, (depending on the design), and in extreme cases both must be replaced to correct the complaint.
