I have an LG washer that has developed a leak At first I thought it was cominf from the seal at the back of the drum, but I now think that it may be the drain hose, as the majority of the water on the floor appears long after the washer has completed its wash cycle (>30 minutes).
Does my diagnoses sound reasonable?
Does the replacement drain (part # AP4457291 I think) )hose come with installation instructions?
Thank you in advance
I suggest that you investigate the leak more prior to purchasing a drain hose. If the drain hose was leaking, then it would most likely be leaking prior to 30 minutes after use.
Look around where you see water. Sometimes you can see a water trail from certain place to lead you to where it is leaking.
Is it leaking from front? Rear?
There are a lot of causes for leaks, so you will need to investigate more to narrow it down.
I have seen a drain hose leaking from a small hole chewed through by a rodent… just a thought.
You could always put down some towels or something that would show you where it was leaking from to narrow it down.
Is the water dirty, brown or greasy?
Maybe my original post wasn’t great.
The leak appears to be coming from the rear left corner (as viewed from the front). A damp spot will appear on the floor during the wash cycle, but it becomes a puddle over time - after the cycle has stopped.
How quickly the puddle forms I cannot say, but if it is only a small leak, then it would seem that very little would leak out during the cycle when water is being pushed past it at speed, and that more would leak out when the washer had stopped and the water sat in the drain hose. Perhaps it would run along the inner lip of the washer side to the rear, where it would find a hole to leak out through. (Just postulating here. :~? )
I took the back off the washer and observed it during a wash cycle, but no clear origination point was seen. What I did see were intermittent drops on the drain hose/washer side, but I could not tell where they were coming from, as it did not leak enough while I was observing it to isolate the problem area.
I cannot tell the color/texture as it is in a dark area on a cement floor. I would say that it is mostly clear.
Does any of this make it more clear?
There is an air vent on that side of unit, and excessive sudsing during a spin cycle (which happens to be end of cycle) will push out some of the suds and cause a small amount of water to leak out vent.
That is one possible reason.
There is always water in some part of the drain hose after a wash. So it you clean up water after use - that leaked out - and then allow unit to stand a couple of days, and no water has leaked out hose, then it is not your drain hose most likely.
If it only happens at the end of a wash and no other time… it could likely be the air vent and sudsing…
You can use less soap or HE detergent.
Usually a hole in a hose will cause more water to leak and will keep on leaking when unit is not in use.
Difficult to diagnose without investigating. Leaks can be elusive to find…
Markram - Thanks for all your advice/suggestions.
Water does continued to appear for quite a long time after the cycle is completed and I have cleaned it up several times - which is why I thought about the drain hose, knowing that it would still have water in it.
Where is this air vent located? Since it is more than just a small amount (standing water easily covers a 6" x 15" area to ~1/8" depth), I doubt that this would be the source based on your description.
I’ll keep looking in hopes of finding something, but I am not hopeful.
Air vent is at top left rear of unit.
There is no easy thing to tell you for a leak. You basically have to find where it is leaking and then go from there.
There are too many places for a washer to leak and without being there, its difficult to tell.
I’ve got it now - at least 99% sure I have.
I made sure that none of the drain hoses were leaking, and then I took the top off in search of the air vent. No leak there either.
But, what I found was the hot water inlet valve/solenoid was not fully closing and it was leaking. That is why the water continued to appear after the machine had stopped - because we don’t turn the water off unless we are leaving for a trip.
Does that sound reasonable?
Have you heard of many of these failing?
Should I replace the cold water valve/solenoid at the same time just to be sure?
Thanks for urging me to keep checking.
Just wanted to give an update on this.
I replaced the hot water solenoid (easy fix) and that has solved the problem.
(I should have posted this long ago, but kept getting side-tracked, snd then just forgot. :~( )
