Washer knocks when engaging spin cycle

My tenants wash machine occasionally makes a very loud knocking noise when trying to go into spin cycle. Doesn’t do this every time and when I open lid , it appears to spin slower than when this doesn’t happen. Seems like it’s not engaging the basket and sounds like it’s slipping or skipping past gear teeth. It is not out of balance or overloaded. It is perfectly level and stable. How would I take off the outer housing to watch the machine while it’s running and try to see something obvious. I don’t have the manual as this is a used machine I set her up with. Very clean and in great shape. I just hope this isn’t anything I can’t fix for her. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

except in your case you have clips rather than screws which hold the console on. Slide a thin blade under the console near the edges to release them.
