Washer knob no longer pushes in or out

The knob on my washer no longer pushes in or out. To set the cycle, you pull the knob out so the washer doesn’t engage - you can’t do that now. the washer still works although you have to flip through all the cycles - am sure this is not good.

Is it the timer washer? And if yes, is this a big deal to repair?

Take control panel down; if the timer is gray I am almost sure the tabs that hold the timer in place are broken. In any case check to see if the timer is loose. If the tabs are broken/loose you may be able to put a large washer on the screw to hold it in place. You may have to replace the timer.

OK - I took it apart and the gray timer is secure - the tabs are not broken. Order another timer?

I think I can install it - I did manage to get in and get out and resecure the knob. It looks like an easy repair - am I underestimating this?

It is simple just make sure the knob and the dial are not binding in any way before ordering the new timer. The knob is held on by a clip then the dial just slips off. It must be something in the timer broken.

what do you mean - the knob and dial are not binding in any way?

Well since the timer is expensive I would make sure the knob isn’t causing your problem.

I think it is in the timer but just make sure.

I appreciate your help - but I still don’t understand what I am suppose to be checking for in regard to the knob and dial. Could you be more descriptive.

Well I guess the best way to rule it out is to remove the knob and dial and see use a pair of pliers to see if the timer will work without the dial and knob.

That can happen is if the dial isn’t on far enough or is broken it can make the knob hard to push in and out.

I feel like the timer is bad. It is just that it would be a shame to buy the timer just to find out the dial was broken.
