Washer fills on wash cycle and rinse cycle and won't stop filling!

Our Washing Machine is doing something strange. When it starts to fill the washer for the wash cycle or rinse cycle, it won’t let the machine fill up. The water just flows and flows. It’s almost like whatever is supposed to close on the bottom (it’s a top loader) is not closing so the water is just running right through it instead of filling up. We have to advance it to the spin cycle to get it to stop filling up. What in the world could be going on?

Where the drain hose goes? How high it goes?

What is the complete model number of the washer?

Gene.

The drain hose goes out the back of the washer and is connected to the faucets in the wall. They are located above the washing machine, they are not lower than the top of the washing machine. The complete Model Number is FWS235RFS6.

Remove the front panel and check the drain pump. If it’s always “on” during any cycles (especially during the wash or the rinse cycles) then the timer has to be replaced.

Ok, walk me through this like I’m 5 years old because I know nothing about Washing Machines. Where is the drain pump and how can I tell if it is “on”?

The drain pump is located inside the washer. You have to remove the front panel (#42 on the cabinet break down diagram) to access the drain pump.

[LEFT]Remove the two screws on the bottom of the front panel. Slide the front panel down and pull it toward yourself.

The drain pump should vibrate while it’s working.

ok, i did all this and when it is not filling, the pump is not vibrating. once i put it on the spin cycle, then the pump begins to vibrate. do you still think it is the timer?

Did it vibrate while it was filling?

Gene.

nope, it did not vibrate while the washer was filling. well, i didn’t touch it because nothing in there is grounded but, my pump is very loud so it’s easy to tell when it’s going.

There is something mysterious going on with your washer and this is beyond my expertise.

Maybe somebody else on the forum can help you better.

Gene.

You need to pull the drain hose out on the pipe some. You said drain hose is hooked to a faucets. Those are your fill lines. Pull your hose out and hold in your hand and start the washer with the hose end above the washer.

I totally agree. It sounds like the machine is merely drain siphoning while filling.

Very common problem.

I need some help with a Maytag model LAT9416AAM washing machine that does not stop filling even if I unplug the machine…I have to turn off water valves…can you help me…also the level switch is possibly out because the switch can be on mini load and it fills the machine up with water no matter what is selected…

Most likely the problem caused by the water inlet valve which stuck open.

The water inlet valve has to be replaced.

In order to provide the right part number for the water inlet valve I need the serial number of the washer.

Gene.

The only possible problem is the inlet valve hanging open.
