Viking rangetop out of control flames

A builder friend of mine gave me this rangetop. When I turn it on to high, the flames reach up to a foot high. It’s more normal when I turn the knob lower though. Is this just the way Vikings are? It seems like a fire hazard to me.

Also, when I use the griddle function, The front panel of the unit becomes hot enough to cause a blistering burn if you touch it. (I put my meat thermometer on top and it read over 212°) again, is this normal? I guess I don’t mind being careful not to touch it, but I suspect that that heat can’t be good for the electronic parts inside of it

I get a gas delivery to my house(I assume this means propane?). Could it be that I need some kind of conversion to make this range work right on my gas?

It just needed LP conversion nozzles.

Still not sure about the heat issue though. Is it normal?
