I have a VRGC 365 4GDBk viking ser # R11080225486 oven that I think the ignitor also is starting to fail. At various times, one burner comes on but the other does not, sometimes both come on at a reduced flame, and it is taking a long time to heat up the oven. (The broiler works fine.) This has happened before and I had a repair person replace both ignitors and it solved the problem. Does the flat ignitor that is sold here work on the viking?
hot surface ignitors are notorious for failing or getting “weak” and not draw enough amperage ( 3.2 - 3.6 amps )… replacing both ignitors is always a good idea to start out with as the gas bi-metal valves don’t fail very often. Ignitors can be replaced relatively easily ( with the POWER OFF )… replacement ignitors can be ordered here, im sure..Ceramic bases should be similar / exact size and mounting bracket should be as close to exactly the same as original as possible!!!
I cannot verify that the Maytag part listed in the attached link is a fit for your Viking ignitor or not, but the string discussion is interesting. It sounds like the Viking ignitor has a poor reputation and the Maytag part is recommended.
I bet this componet is a rather standard off the shelf part and not specific to Viking. At the price listed, it’s worth a try replacing both.
I’m having some similar problems with my VGRC365-6BD.
Since, pretty much ALL the ignitors are MADE by the same company as long as the person changing the ignitor is not MISREPRESENTING the client by telling them it is the OEM ignitor and charging them for an ORIGINAL and giving the client a NON-ORIGINAL. However, as the as the ceramic base is almost exact and the bracket is exactly the same, really, there is NO difference. And to tell you the truth, I have used the same BOSCH part on my VW as my BMW… they were both made by BOSCH, but it was half the price or the part at the VW dealer and the BMW dealer ..
I am having the same issue with my Viking oven. It takes forever to heat up and if I keep it going at 500 my temp gauge will indicate no more that 300. I’ve heard this could be an ignitor issue or a thermostat issue. I am hoping to repair this myself. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
If it takes more than 60 seconds for a burner to come on, the igniter is bad and has to be replaced. If there are two igniters in the oven then replace both of them.
You can order igniter(s) through Viking (much more $$$$) or use any other name. As Jim said in the previous reply there is only one igniter manufacturer who makes igniters nationwide and all oven manufacturers just put their name (and price) on it. Most important is the length of the ceramic part and configuration of the mounting bracket. Otherwise they all are the same. Post the size of the ceramic and we can help you to find a better price.
I have replaced both of the ignitors in my Viking oven with those recommended in this thread and all was well for the first ten minutes until I heard a pop and then the oven went out. Any advise?
Gene,
Thanks for getting back to me, but seems to be fine now. How nice it is to have a oven that comes to temperature so fast and accurately.

i too have same issue with my viking. however when i set dial to 400+, both burners will run consistantly but will take forever to come to temp. as such seems the ignitors working just fine. someone mentioned on this thread that the flame itself can vary in strength. is this true and what regulates that? thought the ignitors turned a flame on/off and flame only came in 1 size! also there is an inordinate amount of heat escaping out the top vents and i have long believed that is cause of oven not heating quickly. will be happy to replace ignitors (can do it myself) if that does trick but i am doubtful. pls help…
I have had my viking range for 8 years and have had the ignitors replaced twice. It costs about $400 in service call for them to come out and I’d rather do it myself. I have one burner and my oven that is currently out. Does anyone know where I can find directions to replace these myself?
From pilot igniters firing at random to oven issues it’s had major issues. Unfortunately I was in love with the stainless steel tank-like facade.
My oven ignitors totally failed today, no lighting at all. I was lucky towards the end to have one burner go on, then 15 minutes later have the other fire up. I’m super glad to see the replacement parts are interchangeable. There’s no way I’m shelling out another $500. to have this POS repaired! Thankfully my husband can repair it!
Last time I spoke w/ Viking they said “you could afford it? You can afford to repair it”
so are we sure it’s not the t-stat and not the ignitors?
my oven - both ignitors glow - gas comes - nice hearty burn - but then the gas flow rate tapers way down - but not off and it doesn’t get above 200 degrees.
wouldn’t a bad t-stat that thinks it’s at full temp restrict the flow of gas?
how would an ignitor that glows and does ignite the gas control the amount of gas flow to the burner?
