Trying to replace the start capacitor on Whirlpool Fridge

Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: EED-192PK
Main Symptom: Compressor will not start
What happens & when:

Error Code (if any):
Parts or tests already tried: I have the start capacitor that I bought a year or so ago and never got to the DIY, because I did not need the fridge at the time. If I turn the thermostat to off and then to the coldest setting to get it to start…..I hear the click. If I do that two or three times it will eventually turn on and run until it’s time to turn off. Then when it needs cooling again, the compressor will not fire again on first call. I have to kick start it again.

Below is what I emailed in before they pointed me to this forum. I will include the pics.

My refrigerator is pretty old. It is a Whirlpool side by side and the model number inside the door is EED-192PK. About a year ago the compressor would randomly stop and not come back on. When trouble shooting I would turn the thermostat to off, then turn it to coldest. If I did this a couple of times the compressor would eventually kick on and work fine until it was time to shut off again, and then I would have to do the same thing. This seemed pretty straight forward at the time that my start capacitor was going bad. So back when this happened, I’m pretty sure I ordered a start capacitor from you guys. I didn’t exactly need the fridge at the time, so I let the DIY project go for quite a bit. Last week I decided to tackle the project, so I popped the little cover off on the compressor where the start capacitor should be, but it looked nothing like your videos and or any other videos. Somehow, a year ago, I was able to plug in the model number and order the start capacitor. Now when I try and enter the model number, I get nothing. Since it was so long ago, I have no idea how I decided on the part I received, other than maybe it worked at the time, or maybe I found a more detailed model number somewhere else on the fridge. I would like to send you pictures of the compressor and the parts attached to the compressor with the cover removed, and see if you have any idea what I have and what I might need if this start capacitor is not it.

The part that you are showing in the photo is an overload. The capacitor or the overload would typically not cause what is going on with the unit. This would be more likely a thermostat issue rather than one of those.

So when I throw the thermostat or dial to off and then move it all the way to the coldest setting, I can hear the click that is trying to start the compressor I just have to do it two or three times before the compressor kicks on and runs. That’s the thermostat???

Also just curious. Does every fridge have a start capacitor? If this one does, I can’t seem to find it anywhere.

I would recommend testing for 120 vac at the compressor when you are doing this. If constant power is supplied then this will be a start device or overload issue. If the power stops being sent then the thermostat would be the issue.
