Transmission test

My Whirlpool washer has not been spinning. It agitates perfectly and occasionally it will spin but usually it does not even try to spin. The motor coupler is in tact and as far as I can tell the clutch and the brake assemblies look fine. I am thinking that it might be in the transmission but was wondering if there was a way to check to make sure that the transmission is the problem before I replace it or (more likely) junk the machine. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Pull off the pump and motor, then turn the tranny coupler clockwise till spin engages. If very hard to turn, you have sticking brake shoes. If the clutch housing fails to turn, you have a bad tranny.

Thanks for the reply. As it turns out the transmission was the problem. I was able to take the transmission apart and replace the broken part using the Whirlpool ‘neutral drain kit’ (part # AP3018165).
