top load lid lock

The lid lock on my Maytag Bravos top load washing machine kicks in and stops the cycle for 5 mins. Originally it started doing this during the spin cycle as it began to slow. Now, it also happens during the sensing. The lid lock stops the sensing 3x (ea. for 5 mins) and then it begins to fill the tub HALF FULL…this is NOT on the “bulky” cycle. It never kicks in during the wash cycle…the impeller seems to be ok. Usually it does get to a high rate of spin but only for a short time. One person told me she had trouble w/her lid lock and the service man said the basket was not screwed in properly (a common problem w/he top loaders)…took him 5 mins to fix. Any suggestions for diagnosing the problem?

The idea of the basket not being screwed in properly is a new one, but with this model anything is possible.

I suggest you get the tech notes that are under the top and see if you can generate some error codes or diagnostics. The control unit is often the problem on these models, but the whole door lock assembly is also suspect.

My model does not have a digital display on the front panel that would indicate an error code. Without the digital display, is there another way to determine the problem internally? If not, should I go ahead and replace the control unit?

If you can get the tech notes that are under the lid they will explain how to use the led display to generate error codes.

You can always replace the control unit on spec, and if you buy from this site and the part does not fix the problem you can return it.

Given the cost of the part you should consider whether or not you want to repair the machine, or just get a new one. A basic top loader will do just fine.

Good luck, let us know how it turns out.
