Timer/Knob Assembly Pulls Off/Can't Start

I tried to start my dryer and the Timer/Knob Assembly just came off in my hand. On talking to someone, they said to try to use pliers to turn the stem, and then pull it out; the stem will turn but will neither pull out or push in. Do I need a new timer (which the stem is attached to) or a new knob? The knob seems to be in perfectly good shape; and this part is discontinued. What do you think? Thanks in advance for your help.

Why do you need to pull out or to push in the timer stem? If you just want to start the dryer then there is a separate push-to-start button on the right side of the control panel (#81 on the diagram).

The knob for the timer has been discontinued and is no longer available.

I guess it’s stress or a sign of age. You’re right and thank you; I was getting the washer mixed up with the dryer. Thank’s for setting me straight; you’re an angel! (Wish everything could be fixed so easily.)

Thanks for the straight forward answer - can’t believe I didn’t realize this point!
