I have an older Woods upright freezer, in which the start relay has gone. The model # is U475. A local appliance parts store said parts are no longer available for this brand, as they are out of business. Is there any universal replacement parts that could be used? What additional info would you need to determine the correct replacement relay and overload? The relay is clicking and not turning on, and when I remove it and shake it, it does rattle inside.
Hi, It is a plastic relay and overload. Photo is here
I also tested the compressor contacts with an ohmmeter (it is a 3 pin triangle). the readings between the pins jump around a lot. Is this normal? i.e. on a single reading, the resistance will be 40, than 10, than 11, than 9 and it never stays at a single number, it continues to bounce around. I tested multiple times and it is always does the same thing, but the measured values can be slightly different. e.g.
A-B 40,10,11,9 / 100, 11,10,9 /
B-C 40,16,13 / 40, 16,13 / 60, 15, 12
B-C 9,4,2
“/” separates multiple test of same contacts.
I labeled the contacts A, B, C since I’m not sure which are Common, Start, Run.
Tested compressor contacts to ground is infinite for all three.
Get a new meter at Walmart, about $9, yours might be defective. Check your compressor ohms again.
If the meter is a digital one and you know it’s good, try cleaning your compressor pins.
Hi, testing the meter, it does the step down until it reaches the final measured value. I tested it with some resistors and it is reporting the correct resistance. also changed the batteries and cleaned contacts on the compressor. Here are the values from the compressor:
A - B: 7.9 ohm
A - C: 9.7 ohm
B - C: 2.1 ohm
I’ve found out the freezer is about 25 years old. Is a relay / overload available and is it worth fixing? (when the relay would start the compressor, it was freezing and maintaining temp).
The top compressor pin is always common. The resistance from the common pin to lower left must be higher than to the lower right. If so, the bottom left pin is the start pin.
If so, order the entire start device including klixon overload WR09X10106
or AP379651 on this site.
