My KitchenAid dishwasher (model KUDCO3IT) has started smoking. It is coming from near the top out of the vent area while in dishwashing mode. We bought it in 2007 & it has worked great until the last week or so. The smoke smell has been gradually getting stronger. I only was dishwasher approved items, lightweight disposable tops in the upper rack. Any ideas what might be happening?

You said that you were washing “lightweight disposable tops in the upper rack” so my first guess is that one of them has fallen down to the bottom and is on/near the heating element.

If not the above remove the door’s inner panel and check for signs of overheating.

At the top of the list would be the wax motor on the vent assembly.
