Brand: Sears Kenmore 500 series Model Number:110.28522701 Main Symptom: intermittent spin What happens & when: Sometimes spin cycle works, sometimes not, sometimes very slowly. I use heavy duty cycle and spin cycle is hit or miss. My wife uses delicate cycle and reports no issues. When spin is not working, if i grab the drum and apply motion it might continue to spin at very low rpm or it may not take the spin i input. I replace the motor - no joy. What do you think it could be?
Error Code (if any):none
Parts or tests already tried: replaced motor

You have a direct drive washer, there are several things that can keep it from spinning, can you elaborate a little more as to what is happening and when?
Wash cycle works fine. Agitator turns. Everything seems to be good until spin cycle is supposed to start then spin may or may not start, spin may or may not spin at normal speed.
When it goes into a drain mode, the motor runs and drains the water. It is supposed to then stop, the motor comes on again, and it then starts to spin. Is that happening? Is it stopping after a pump out?
Hard to say. Motor drains tub. Washer stops then makes sound like motor is engaging. Sometimes washer spins sometimes not. Sometimes full speed sometimes not.
You may have a clutch that is slipping and not turning fast enough to spin pit the water in the clothes. Next time it goes into spin, raise the lid, put a pen or pencil in the slot where the lid plunger goes so you can watch it spin. If it is real slow and you can reach in and stop the basket from spinning, it is the clutch.
I have done just that. Sometimes it spins normally. Sometimes it doesnt turn at all. Sometimes it spins slow and yes I can reach in and grab the top of the drum and it stops. Sometimes when its not spinning I can grab the drum and spin it and it may start to turn and maintain that slow micro speed or it may just stop. It is particularly susceptible to not spinning/spinning slowly when I have heavy clothes in the washer (Jeans). If I take at least half the load out, and turn the timer knob back to spin it works. Sometimes it doesn’t.
That is the clutch slipping. I would replace the clutch and gearcase. You will have to remove the gearcase to get to the clutch. Or, scrap it and buy a new washer. The direct drive washers are good, they don’t like heavy loads.
Yes, the transmission. If you are going to keep this washer, I would fix it up right so you don’t have to tear it down again. or, you can just replace the clutch, it’s up to you.
