First check for proper voltage going to the dryer at the terminal block where the power cord attaches to the dryer. black to white, 120 volts, red to white, 120 volts, black to red, 240 volts. If your voltages are good, I would suggest replacing the motor, It could be locking up, which would draw more amperage to start, causing the dimming effect you are seeing.

Thanks for getting back. I did check the power at the outlet and checked the tightness of the terminals on the cord connection. Checked all the resistors and thermostats. Also the door switch. With no load it starts slow and dims then picks up speed. Once it gets to full speed it al lights up. But as soon as I put a couple small items in it hardly wanted to rotate. So more than likely the motor not the control board?

I would say the motor, not the control

Thanks for your time I greatly appreciate it. I will get the motor ordered.

Ok…I have the dryer all torn apart. Bent and broke a motor mounting clip trying to get the blower fan off. Tried using my dewalt 20v impact at first and the belt pulley nut spun off. Then went to a breaker bar and vise grip. Still can’t get the nut to budge. I don’t want to break anything else. Suggestions?

Got it. I’m a dumb ass!

No, but now you know how to do it, that makes you smarter than someone else who has never tried.

So I installed the new motor. Now it will turn on but now when you push the start you hear the motor hum for a second then it shuts off. It doesn’t even try to turn. It seems to be turning kind of hard. At least I was able to force it to spin in service mode but it just wouldn’t turn with a load.

Are you all ready for this. Like I said I installed the new motor and had worst results. So I found a used dryer on CraigsList for 200 bucks. I just spent $350 on the motor I just put in, so in all it was still cheaper than buying a new one. I got the used one in the house, plugged it in and it did the same thing as the one I repaired. It lit up and as soon as you hit the start button it shut off. So I took them both to my neighbors house and plugged them in and they worked fine. So back at my place I removed the electrical panel cover off and noticed that the ground and the neutral were bonded together. Once I separated them and plugged it in it worked fine. Just an FYI the groud and neutral should only be bonded at the first panel at the pole. The house was built in 1984 so it has been running like that for 40 years. WOW!
