I have a Roper by Whirlpool electric dryer that is not heating up correctly.
To check it, I held the door open and depressed the door switch, and started the dryer. I can see the heating element start to glow and turn red; however, after a few seconds, it turns off.
I suspect a thermostat or limit switch.
What would you replace first, or should I replace both of them at the same time ?

From what you are saying I would first suspect a venting issue. If you have checked and verified that the dryer vent hose and the line in the wall is clear then I would suspect a thermostat issue.
You can watch a video that explains how to test the thermostats on the backside of your dryer by clicking on the link below. Check the vent hose and the vent in the wall that’s where I would suspect your problem is.
