Hi,
We noticed lately some strange sounds towards the end of the spin cycle on our front load Frigidaire.
I’ve removed the back and the suspension springs and support shocks seem to be in good working order.
Close inspection of the front, where the boot meets the tub revealed this:
(pics of plastic retrieved and shot of ring being worn out.)
The ring is not chewed up like this all the way around.
When I spin the tub by hand it doesn’t seem to spin in a circle anymore, but sort of rubs to one side.
So, what could be causing this? What part is this ring? Is it a DIY job to replace?
Finally in my curiosity to check the ring the boot actually came off the ring. Doesn’t seem to want to just slip back on either. Any hints?
This is one of those problems where folks like us really need to be there to see it and take the machine apart to determine the problem.
That being said, if you sure the springs and support shocks are ok I think a likely cause is the failure of the rear tub bearings which support the spin basket. This is a common failure on these machines, although the usual symptom is noise and not what you are experiencing. It is also possible the problem is with the support of the spin basket.
Unfortunately the bearings, if that is the cause, are not replaceable without replacing the rear outer tub, which is expensive.
Attached is a service manual for a machine like yours. See if it will help you diagnose the problem.
Thanks for the quick answer. I figured it wasn’t something easy. It never is. I have a bad feeling it’s a bearing cause like I said the barrel is turning “out of round”. Good news is these front loaders have dropped in price alot since we bought it. Bad news is we’re victims of “designed obsolescence” once again.
A no frills top loader will do a great job for you and cost a lot less and if you get one without microprocessor controls it should last a long time with little or no repairs.
