Replacing Spark Igniter/Spark Electrode

Over a long period of time (years) we have had intermittent trouble with bake igniter. Tonight after many attempts the oven never did light. It clicks, but won’t start.

Based on what I found on the Internet, it appears that the problem may be the spark igniter.

I found a part #1027497 for a spark igniter/spark electrode. This part was also described as a “oven bake burner with spark igniter.” I am a novice at oven repair and need step-by-step instructions for removing and replacing this part.

Thanks, Dan

Requested help from forum to replace bake burner & spark igniter (Part #3598752) for Kenmore Oven Model #6657.5012101. Never got a reply, so on 1/14/09 I went ahead and ordered the bake burner & spark igniter from AppliancePartsPros.

Price including shipping was $50.94, which was $12.34 less than price from a local appliance parts company in Minneapolis. Received part by UPS ground o days later on 1/16/09.

Removed all racks from oven. Then removed bottom tray of oven (2 screws in back). Then removed metal cover over the bake burner (two screws in front). Pulled the oven out from the wall and disconnected the electrical plug, and cleaned all the accumulated goop. Then took drawer out of bottom of oven to expose the electrical connection to the spark igniter.

Gently removed the connector from the old spark igniter by wiggling slightly. Then removed 1 screw holding the slotted end of the bake burner to the front of the oven. Then removed 1 screw holding the bake burner bracket to the back of the oven. Lifted old bake burner and igniter out.

Put my head in the oven and used a flashlight to look down into the hole to locate the end of the gas tube (in the drawer opening under the stove). Carefully placed the open end of the bake burner over the gas tube. Inserted 1 screw (back of oven) to secure the bake burner bracket to the back of the oven. Then inserted 1 screw (front of oven) to secure slotted end of the bake burner.

Took my flashlight and reached under the oven (into the drawer compartment). Gently inserted the electrical connector onto the end of the igniter.

Plugged the electrical plug back in. Pushed oven back into opening. Then secured metal cover over bake burner with two screws (front of oven). And secured bottom tray of oven with two screws (back of oven). Reinserted oven racks and oven drawer.

Turned on oven. Came right on, preheated and baked normally! SUCCESS. Probably a $200 job for $50.94.
