replacing defrost heater in GE

I’ve recently attempted to trouble shoot my refrigerator that won’t defrost. After detaching the back panel of the freezer I have found unbelievable amounts of ice even after 24 hours without power. Turns out that the defrost heater was smashed to pieces due to ice pressure. I have found the part online WR51X365 and it appears to be way more expensive than other similar defrost heaters. My question is do I have to use this exact part or is there another defrost heater that would suffice? Thank you.

There are no generic ones you can use for this fridge. I also recommend you replace the defrost thermostat as that may have been the reason it froze up on ya…WR50X122

thanks for your info

My freezer iced up, took the back plate off, completely frozen up with ice, unplugged it overnight, put back together, cooled to zero, now 20 degrees ,please advise,

It seems that your compressor is having some problem. I suggest you to consult a technician for it.
