I need to replace the compressor in my Whirlpool side by side. It’s DOA pulls 18 amps with a clamp on amp meter when it trys to start. Locked rotr is 20A.The replacment assembly would be 8201558(Whirlpool 2183455). The assembly includes a copper dryer unit. Is that only used for installation instead of a Schrader valve? Is the dryer unit used to insure that mositure content is to spec for a new installation or during operation of the new compressor? How much 134A will it take to install the new unit? Does anybody have a step by installation guide? I have access to a vacumn unit and pressure gages.
You may just need a new start relay, just order the factory replacement. Compressor replacement for the " average person" is to be avoided if possible. I try to avoid it myself, too many things may go wrong.
if you have never done it, don’t… at least unless you are ready to still buy a new refrig after you’re done and it still doesn’t work. no offense, but this is difficult for pro’s. you have to be pretty damn good with a torch to do it and not melt everything around it.
good luck…
The starter was a piece of charcoal. Did try a different one almost fried that one too. Is the coppper dryer tube in the assembly photo also an access valve?
In addition to Rich’s and Roy’s recommendations I want you to know that
it is illegal to handle refrigerants without EPA certification. Violation of this law subject to fine and could be as much as $27,500
Uh, Gene, don’t think there is any restriction for handling R134A and I’m sure he has R134A in his fridge. It might require a certificate to buy it though. High fines are only for hydrocarbons like R22, R11, R12 etc.
