Refrigerator and freezer does not maintain temperature setting. They are either both warm 45° to 50° in fridge and 20° in freezer OR 35° in fridge and 0° to -10° in freezer. I cleaned coils and fan and compressor seems to be OK. What control could cause the temperature inside to fluctuate. I have a thermometer in both freezer and refrigerator. When it registers warm, I check it about 1 hour later and it is back to the correct cool temperature.

When the refrigerator gets warm check if the evaporator fan (inside the freezer), the condenser fan (next to the compressor) and the compressor are all running. the compressor should slightly vibrate and make a bit of a humming sound. If they all runs that illuminates both fans, the cold control and the compressor start relay and overload. Next you should remove the rear cover panel in the freezer section and check if the evaporator coil is evenly, partially or not at all covered with the frost. If there is only partial frost or no frost and only a little bit of ice or snow build up at the top corner, that is a sign of a sealed system problem. Could be a restriction or failing compressor. In any cases you will need to call a professional repair person. $$$ :((

Just got back from vacation. I did check evaporator and condenser fans and compressor when fridge gets warm and they are all running. The temperature in the fridge was between 28° and 40° for almost a week. Then I adjusted the freezer control back to “B” and the refrigerator control to “3” which are the normal settings and then the temperature started to fluctuate again from warm to cold during the day. Could the temperature control be defective?
Yes it could be bad.
Also, check the flow from freezer to fridge.

The frost pattern seems OK. It definitely is not heavily frosted. There might be a bit more frost on the top of the coil where the evaporator fan is but I wouldn’t say that it is obvious. It bothers me that the temp fluctuates so drastically. Fridge and Freezer are empty so they are not being opened except to check the temperature on the thermometer.

If you are absolutely sure that both fans and the compressor are running and the evaporator coil is completely and evenly frosted while the freezer and the refrigerator are both warm, the only thing I can think off is a faulty cold control. You may use a jumper wire to jump the cold control (also known as the thermostat) for a few days (do not leave it on for too long, it may cause the evaporator to freeze over) to see if the temperature won’t fluctuate as before. Be careful not to cause a short. Replace the thermostat if the temperature will stabilized.
