Unit gradually stopped cooling/freezing. Motor runs, fan runs. No freon odor. How can I tell if the compressor has died? Recharging freon a possibility? Those repairs are beyond my skill level. Unit is 18 years old. Time to give it up?
Pull the back freezer panel and check for partial frost pattern. If so, and the failure took like only a week or two, you have a bad refrigerant leak probably in the evaporator. Probably not worth fixing, too costly.
Thanks. No evidence of a partial frost pattern on the cooling blades. When I put it back together, the coldest temp I could get in the freezer was about 40 degrees.

If the compressor is running hot, it sucked in non-compressables, if running cool, either a bad compressor or refrigerant leak. Gauges and amprobe would verify.
