The fridge stops working, if I tap on the top front inside of the refrigeator it starts and runs for a while and will cool. I have replaced the defrost timer and the problem still is there.

If by “stops working” you mean that the compressor will not start, this is not a defrost problem. If you had a defrost problem the compressor would probably run all the time. The unit would try to cool down but never be able to achieve it’s set point since the air is not cooled efficiently.
My guess would be that your thermostat contacts are sticking open.
Yes, the compressor stops running and will not start unless I tap on the inside top of the fridge. I was told to replace the defrost timer (told it was probably stuck on defrost which will keep the compressor from starting). So, should I replace the cold control?
That is what I would do as it does not sound like a defrost problem and you have already replaced the defrost timer.
To double check rotate the timer to just before a defrost cycle.
Mark a spot the defrost timer cam and also on the frame.
The marks will tell you if it is advancing.
Let it go into defrost.
Check it in half an hour it should be out of defrost by then.
If the cam continues to rotate then odds are very high that the timer is OK.
I also have the same problem, but mine only happens when it gets cold out. I have the frig in the garage as a second one. During the summer all is good. Once it gets cold out everything defrost. Once the temp gets below like 40. If I turn the heat on in the garage it freezes again. Any thoughts?
