"Muddy" particulate in washer

Lately, on occassion when removing clothes from the washer I find little “muddy” particlulate / flecks in the tub and in the clothes. I can rub them between my fingers and the “smear” and appear to be like mud / algea. This recently began. Another clue may be that the washing cycle seems to be making more of a “swoosh” sound then it had in the past.

Is there a rubber / seal item that may be coming apart which is showing up in the tub? Is there a filter that may need cleaning? Is there an assembly manual available that shows how to open the machine’s top so the top of the drum can be inspected for dirt that may need to be cleaned?

Help dirty clean clothes are no fun!

Cletus,

It’s most likely a build up inside the tubs and agitator, you could try "cleaning out the tubs, Add 4 oz. of powderred automatic dishwasher detergent (cascade, sun light etc) and 1 cup chlorine bleach to the tub. Select hot wash cold rinse, regular wash settings and highest water level, allow the washer to fill and wash for at least 12 minutes stop the machine ana allow an additional 10 minute soak time. Then allow the washer to run the remainder of the cycle. The enzymes and surfactant in the dishwasher detergent will remove any oils or chemicals from the tub the Bleach will irradicate any algae or mildew and you’'l have a safe clean tub.

To remove the top of the washer, you’ll need a flat blade tool(putty knife) To press in on the two spring clips in the seam between the top and front panel push in to release the clip and pull out at the top of the front panel to clear to top and lift up and out to release the panel from the lower tabs on the base.
To remove the washer top, Locate and remove the 1/4 in hex head screws on the front left and right side of cabinet top support. Pull the top panel and lid assembly towards you and up about 2 in. disconnect the bleach dispenser funnel clamp with pliers. Release the lid switch wire connector in the right rear corner of the cover(you may need to press down on wiring to allow clearance to remove conectors. Remove top and lid assembly taking care not to allow lid to swing or top to fall or drop and get damaged.

Good Luck and Thanks

Your suggestion regarding “cleaning” the tub were on track. I found “sludge” under the agitator while wiping the drum with a towel. I removed the agitator (pulled straight up to “unlock” and remove) and found a buildup of detergent and “softener” under it. Used a brush and ol fashion elbow grease to remove all the buildup. Cleaned bottom of agitator as well before reassembly. Ran a full wash cycle and included a bit of baking soda to “cleanse” the tub. Thanks for the guidance.

Clean clothes are better than dirty clean clothes.

Cletus,

Great, Glad it wasn’t anything major .

If you do a lot of cold or warm water washes, You may want to consider running a “clean” cycle at least once a year.

Thanks and Good Luck,

My Samsung WA5451AN is exhibiting the same issue. I have run several “Pure” loads and turned up the water temp as I am positive this is just regular build up.
When the current cycle finishes, I will put the DW detergent in and run it. There is no way to pull any agitator as there isn’t one. Any other recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Carneyidaho, You can also add 1 cup of chlorine bleach to the tub, and fill the bleach dispenser then start the cycle. Make sure you select a hot wash cold rinse cycle. The bleach will help eliminate the odor from the inside and reduce the mold or mildew that may have built up inside the washer.

Joe, thank you. I found I was able to pull the cover off the agitator (low though it is) and discovered some sludge in there. I am unable to pull the agitator off as it appears to be clamped into the plastic bushing so cleaned as best as I could, used some air to blow out what I could and will run the “Pure” cycle again with more DW detergent and bleach per your recommendation.

Carneyidaho, OK Good Deal…
