Proper clutch spring

I ordered the exact replacement clutch for my washer model and it came assembled with a green spring. The insert said to use the blue spring (3946792) for my washer (20.5" basket). To double check before changing the spring I looked up the individual spring number from the sears parts list and it says its a 3946846 - no color described. I then looked at the old one and its black (at least now it is).

Which spring is the right choice (green from kit, blue from kit, or 3946846 ordered individually from Sears parts)?

Thanks,

George

I Think The Spring In The Bag Is Only For ,washers That Are 24 Inch Or Smaller And Also For Portable Washers.the Spring Already On The Clutch Is The One For Heavy Duty Or Large Capacity Baskets…

The spring on the clutch was green which the sheet said was for smaller washers. Thats why I changed to the blue one but the blue and green spring numbers do not agree with the number shown for the seperate spring on the parts list.

GEORGE…I have a clutch in my hand for a heavy duty sears washer and the spring is blue…

To double check, I ordered the individual spring for my machine from the Sears parts list and got a green spring. Any ideas?

Thanks,

George

In searching various tech support data bases I see that originally there was a black (smaller machines) and a blue (larger machines) spring for the original 6 pad clutch. That does not explain the black spring in the original clutch for my large capacity machine. The clutch was reduced to 3 pads in 1997 for new parts production to reduce noise with black (smaller capacity) and red (larger capacity) springs. I still cannot find a tech bulliten from Whirlpool on the blue and green spring combo that I have.

Any ideas?

George

What would the symptoms be of a clutch spring is:

Too weak?

or

Too strong?

Thanks,

George

In a new machine they use the new 3 pad clutch with a blue spring for the large basket. Thats what I will retrofit this old machine with.
