The pot/pans LED flashes and the display has (–) . and the unit can not be programmed or start.

Have you tried removing power from the unit for a few minutes to see if it will reset?
Could be a shorted key.
See the tech sheet on how to check the kepad/control panel with a meter.
If it checks out OK then I would replace the control board.
Still a bit of a gable but your odds are better.
