I have a Hampton Bay model KC-25Y1 portable A/C that is 8,000 BTU. This unit has cooled my home office through 10 Texas summers. (I mounted external filters and opened the unit every 2 - 3 years to clean condenser and evaporator.)
We’ve had hot/cold/hot/cold this spring. About 2 months ago the A/C was running and the compressor stopped. Normally that only happens when the water tank is full and it also causes the “Water Full” red light to flash on the control panel. In this instance the “Cool” green light was flashing. I’d never seen that before and it’s not listed in the manual. I turned the unit off and worked in another room. It was about a week later before I turned the unit on again, and it has worked fine since then, cooling 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
Yesterday I noticed water under the unit dripping from the case. I opened it up this morning and found the drain in the pan under the evaporator was clogged. Cleaned it out, put it back together and started it up. It cooled fine for about 10 minutes and the compressor turned off and the green Cool light is flashing.
What are the reasons that an A/C’s control circuitry will turn off the compressor? The unit cools fine except when it decides it doesn’t want to. I can do light repair (sensor replacement?), but I don’t have any idea what it might think is wrong.
I’d welcome any guidance you can provide. Thanks in advance!
