Hi - When I set my Whirlpool Oven Model GFE461LVS to 350 degrees, it heats to that temperature briefly that proceeds to get hotter above 600 degrees. I ran the diagnostic test and it says that there is an error code of F6E1 - Runaway Temp, press Start to Clear. I replaced the temperature sensor and still have the same problem? I did not press Start to Clear as I don’t know if this will fix the issue or just clear the error code.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
You have a bad connection at the main board or a bad main board if you already replaced the temp sensor…Also avoid using the self clean option it’ll cause problems if you do. Your part number is #10 if you’ve checked and cleaned the connection in the rear of it.

Thanks for the quick reply. I’ll order the part, give it a try, and let you know how it works out. It seems strange since the oven is less than three years old and we don’t over use it. Also surprised to hear that we should avoid self clean mode (I’ve probably only used it twice in its lifetime). Not a good testimonial for Whirlpool.
Wow - $292.67 for the part?? That’s almost half the price of a new oven!
We live in an age of throw away mentality because manufactures make cheap stuff and sell it to the market at high prices then make parts so expensive it’s not worth buying them so you have to buy a new appliance. It’s sad but true they just care about bottom line and making their share holders happy and not their customers no matter who you buy from.
Very well said. Seems like more and more things are purposely made not to last very long (just beyond their warrantee period). Oh well, before I order the part (or buy a new oven - not Whirlpool), I will try cleaning the connection as you suggested. Thanks and stay tuned.
Well, I took out the main board and looked it over. All connections looked fine. Everything looks brand new. I put it back together and still have the same problem. I found a link where author suggests replacing the contactor (“a very heavy duty switch that turns the current on and off to the heating element”). I searched for this part for my oven, but nothing comes up. I wonder if it goes by another name.

Hi Barry. Did you manage to solve your problem? My Maytag YMER8772WS started doing the exact same thing last night…
Sorry - I meant to post, but forgot. HumboldtRepairMan was correct. It turned out to be the main board. I shopped around and found one from Sears for under $200. It was not too difficult to replace. Just some wires to unplug and unscrew the board. Took some pictures first to use as a reference for reassembly. Good luck with yours.
Thanks HumboldtRepairMan!

Thanks. Sears in the USA or Canada?
I guess I’m shopping for a new main board too…

Humboltrepairman might be from my province Saskatchewan.
Too funny
Hi Captain,
It was Sears USA. Did you check the temperature sensor? It is much cheaper than a new main board. There is a good video here that shows you how to test it: Oven Sensor Test - YouTube
This one shows you how to remove it: Oven Temperature Sensor - How To Replace - YouTube
The oven in the video is different than mine, and I had to remove a metal cover on the back of mine to get to the sensor. I paid $53 for my sensor, but it turned out not to be the problem. Luckily, Sears will refund you for the part if you return it within 60 days.
Good luck - Barry

I haven’t checked the sensor but considering the problem is absolutely identical to yours I thought for sure mine would be a board replacement. What are your thoughts humboltrepairman?
Also how do I clear the F6E1 fault code. The panel says to hit the start time button but I don’t have one…
Sounds like Whirlpool and Maytag have similar boards. Strange that you don’t have the Start Time button. My oven has a set of schematics in a little pouch in the top left back corner. These explain the meaning of the codes and how to reset. Right under the clock are Start and Cancel buttons. When I hit Cancel twice followed by Start, I get a menu that walks me through some settings until I get to the fault codes. Then it tells me how to clear them. Unfortunately, clearing them did not help.
Bad news. Temp sensor is fine.
I’m going board shopping…
Too bad, don’t pay over $200 for a board.

They may be a bit more. Sears Canada is $220
May get lucky and get a used one in town here tommorow too.
