Hi,
our GE dishwasher must be about or over 15 yrs old; it has been in good condition (we go the place about two yrs ago). Model: VRB502JC119, Sr: FD598714. We were away for a few months. Tried using the dishwasher, initial water comes and fills the bottom but after that there is no washing or draining. There is a sound–hum or whirring that i think is from the timer knob.
i tried putting some white vinegar+warm water but it did not work. Also saw other suggestions but wasn’t sure if those would be good for our model.
While a new one is an option but at this time, i’d rather repair this one, if possible. Your help would be very much appreciated.

I can’t get information on this unit, That model number won’t register with the data system we use.
You most likely have a seized motor shaft, ( that style unit was famous for that).
You could try:
Turning the power off,
Remove the kick plate and lower access panel.
If you feel around and find the cooling fan / drain impeller blades( between the pump housing and the motor,
You should be able to turn the fan blade with your finger tip until it breaks loose.
Then run the motor.

I opened the bottom panel and tried looking in for the blade but couldn’t spot it. i made use of a lamp too..may be i will try again in the morning in daylight. I have attached two photos that i took so that i could get some additional help. Please let me know approximately whereabout i would find the fan blade.

I’m using picture no.2
If you slowly and carefully slide your hand down the motor housing(the black part), all the way to the end, towards the (white plastic) pump housing, you will eventually feel a gap, approximately 3/4 inch between the pump housing and the motor housing.
If you slip your finger into the gap, you should feel a plastic disc with vanes molded into it, you should be able to grip one of the vanes and turn the motor shaft a couple of revolutions and break the motor shaft loose.
I am including a picture of an “open faced” motor, so you may have a better idea of what to expect( it will not look like your motor but the concept is the same).
