okay so what causes the coupler to break

Refresher on the original problem. Drains & agitates but no spin, noise (motor my guess) during the spin cycle.

Having torn the thing completely apart and still not seeing anything, I hit the forums again. Everything sounded like a coupler problem, but my coupler was fine…hmmm…went back took the coupler pieces completely off and washed them off. Under the fine layer of grease on the motor side of the coupler is a hairline crack that I couldn’t see before.

So my question is, before reassembling everything what would cause the coupler to crack? If it just age stress related fine, but is there something else I should be checking for while I have all the pieces before me?

Thanks in advance!

It is usually age that causes a coupler failure, and depending on which version you have, some were more susceptible than others to failure. Excessive drag on any part of the drive system will cause couplers to failure prematurely. My best example is someone trying to wash to large a load for the water level selected. This causes drag on the agitator down through the gear case, then to the coupler. The wash motor has plenty of torque so the coupler will eventually fail. If the unit has been working fine, replace the coupler and you should be good.
