No cooling in either freezer or refrigerator sections

There is no cooling in either section of our built-in refrigerator. This is the second time in 8 years that we’ve had this happen. Last time, the professional wound up replacing the main controller board. So, for this time, we orderedthe controller panel from this site and tried it, but didn’t fix the problem, so obviously some other problem this time.

Here’s the symptoms. The interior lights and display panel all work, and the cooling fan at the top comes on and blows across the coils on the top. After I had already ordered the controller from your site, I tried running the diagnostics and it showed items 1-6 as “01” (although it did take 5-8 minutes for station 5, the compressor, to move from a “02” to a “01” indication). Step 7 stays at “02,” and makes me wonder if the “bi-metal” is open (in the heating position).

It appears the compressor is not running (no sound, vibration, or any temperature change on the housing), even though the diagnostic for step 5 went to “01” after about 5-8 minutes.

Hubby ran an ohmeter to check the inverter box (to the compressor). Got an indication of current OK from the refrigerator to the box, but no indication of current (no movement on the analog needle) from the inverter box to the compressor.

Would it be reasonable for me to now try ordering and replacing the inverter box before I call for professional help? Seems an idea since I will also be returning the controller board anyway. Any thing else I might check/try first?

Thanks so much for the help.

Before you return the main control board, check for 3 to 6 volts DC at the inverter red/white and red wires while the refrigerator is in “cooling” mode. If the voltage is not present, check P7-3 & P7-8 on the main control board for 3 to 6 volts DC. If the voltage is not present the main control board is bad.

If the main control board checks OK, perform the compressor test as described in one of our previous threads: http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/refrigerator-freezer-repair/128975-ge-refrigerator-just-clicks-but-does-not-cool.html#post281680

If the compressor checks OK, replace the inverter.
