Newbie ? for GE gas dryer DDG8580SAMWW

Hi all, I’m glad i found this forum perhaps you guys can help me out, my dryer was not drying (no hot air) I replaced the whole ingniter assembly, the main coil also the dual coil and the flame detector. Once I reassembled it I ran it for 30 min. no hot air, i gave it a rest, ran it again this time it heated up for about
40 min, stopped it for awhile now it’s running cold again… what gives? could it be a thermostat? all and any help is appreciated.
Thanks, Screamin Eagle

TTT … Anybody?

Does the igniter go on & off?

Does the igniter glow at all?

Here are the breakdown diagrams and Replacement parts for General Electric DDG8580SAMWW Gas dryer | AppliancePartsPros.com

Gene.

Gene, I’m not sure, this past weekend I replaced the whole igniter assembly along with both coils and a heat detector. At one point it was blowing hot air but it’s not consistant…Today i ordered 2 thermostats…Thank you for responding, I’ll keep ya updated.

Gene M a.k.a. Screamin Eagle

Installed thermostats last night and had Success! I’m relieved..Dryer is
now working properly.

I’m glad you were able to fix it. Good job!

Thank you for the feed back.

I celebrated too early:( …I’m back to on again off again hot air, now I’m really
stumped:confused: Any suggestions?

Gene M,

You did not answer these questions.

Which parts exactly did you replace? Post the reference numbers from the diagrams.

Gene.

Gene, here’s the new parts list: (installed)
230- thermostat
407- thermostat
717- igniter assm.
552- heat detector
729- dual coil
731- main coil
Somehow I passed it over in the beginning but this morning I ordered the
“safety” thermostat a.k.a. thermal fuse. Gene thanks for lending a “helping hand” I’ve been out of work for over a year and a half and taken on “fix it” jobs I normally wouldn’t do, so this site and people like you are a big help.
Happy Holiday,

Gene M,

Sorry to hear it. Unfortunately you are not alone in that boat.

I’m afraid you spend much more money than needed buying unneeded parts. You had to start with investing some small money in a simple ohmmeter and performing a few continuity tests in order to diagnose the problem.

A bad thermal fuse is the most common cause for non heating gas dryers. Did it fix your dryer?

Happy New Year with a good New work!

Gene.

Gene, your right, I thought it would be a simple fix but I just got sucked into the parts vortex…I installed the safety thermostat but that doesn’t seem to be the fix either, any suggestions on what to try or test next? Here’s my current list of new installed parts-

   safety thermostat

230- thermostat
407- thermostat
717- igniter assm.
552- heat detector
729- dual coil
731- main coil

Gene M

I did not get clear if you replaced the thermal fuse (#507 on the diagram)?

Gene.

Gene, yes, the thermal fuse aka safety thermostat has been replaced.

Gene,

I’m sorry to say it but I’m stumped.

I asked other experts working on the forum to look into it. May be someone else will help you out better.

Gene.

Thanks Gene I appreciate it.

Well I’m still at the beginning from where I started, sometimes the dryer will run with hot air and sometimes it just has cool air. What part should I be looking at next?

Gene

I would wiggle the timer knob and see if it is intermittent. If so it may have bad contacts. You can take the timer apart to check for burnt contacts. Timer AP2042833 Lots of times the contacts can be cleaned with fine emory paper.

Thank you RichHappy I will try that.

Gene M

I cleaned the contacts on the Timer, I’ll let ya know what happens this week.
Thanks,
Gene M

Still with intermitent heat but have noticed the timer is now “sticky” doesn’t progress to less and less time

GENE please e-mail me your address i’d like to buy ya a cup of coffee and some doughnuts (DD card) for helping me out
