Microwave Key Panel replacement

The microwave shows F3 code. I found out from web that it is a shorted key panel. Can somebody tell me how to replace the key panel. Is it easy to do this if I buy the part from ApplianceParts. A step by step instruction will be very much appreciated if it is easy to replace.

The key panel is not too difficult to replace yourself.

Unplug the power cord.

Remove the top grille (two screws from the front).

Remove the screw held the control panel (on top), pull it up and toward yourself.

Remove the key panel ribbon from the control board.

Remove all screws held the control board to the control panel.

If you prefer to remove the wires and/or plugs from the control board prior to removing screws, draw a picture of how they are connected for yourself first.

The key panel is selfadhesive. Accurately remove the old key panel from the control panel.

Remove the protective paper from the new key panel and attach it to the control panel.

Assemble in the reverse order.

Good luck.

Thank you very much Gene. I will try this.

Keep me updated, please.

Hi Gene,
There was some mess up with the shipment but finally I got the key panel today. I went and replaced it based on your instructions. The F3 signal disappeared. The message I get now is “Please press clock”. None of the keys including clock are working (no response when I press them). Could you please tell me what could be wrong now. I think something worked because the F3 signal is gone now. Your instructions were great. I very much appreciate your help.

Check the ribbon connection to the control board.

Hi Gene,
I cleaned the ribbon and connected it. Still has the same problem. Could it be PC board? Is it a good idea to replace the microwave?

Sounds very strange to me. If the control board did respond with the shorted key pad, what could cause a damage now?

Anyway, the price for the new control board is $141.05.

A new microwave will cost you something between $250 to $300 plus installation. It is very hard to say which idea is better.

Hi Gene,
I don’t mind replacing the board if the problem is sure with the board. Could it be something else.
Also, how difficult is it to replace the microwave. Can I do it or do I need to get help. Sears is charging $149 just to replace.

I had exactly the same problem. However, I finally got it to work by making sure the ribbon was inserted correctly… lift the top part of the connector, push the ribbon down gently until you fell it grip and then push down the top of the connector to keep it tight. it finally worked for me… Hope this helps.
