This should be simple but… I have a new GE JVM1870 microwave. It requires a charcoal filter to be installed. The GE drawing shows this filter slipping into the front of the machine and clicking into place. Problem is the drawing does not match the real microwave. This is the model with the door that swings open when the microwave is turned on. Anyone had experience with this?
Thanks,
Jack
Does your microwave vented out?
If it does, then you do not need any charcoal filters.
Gene.
Gene,
It vents forward, recirculates into the room. GE claims the filter is required for this arrangement but they admitted on the phone that they do not know how to put the filter in this model and that their installation manual is wrong.

Jack,
In order to get access to the charcoal filter you have to remove the the top grill (#109 on the break down diagram) first.
Remove the screw on each side on top of the microwave, slide the grill to the left to release tabs and pull it toward yourself.
Replace the filter and assemble it in reverse order.

Gene,
Thanks, I missed that in the drawing. The grate # 19 has been the problem. You say that the screws are on top of the microwave? If so then I would need to lower the microwave. That seems like a really bad design if that’s how it has to be done.
I will take a look at it when I get home.
Thanks
Gene,
Thanks for the advice! The extra longs bolts really came in handy. Job completed.

I have the same problem with model number jvm1640wb002. I need the charcol filter too, but the diagram in the user manua1 does not match to what I see inside the MV when the grill is removed. According to GE’s literature, it requires jx81d filter kit, and when I do a search online, it comes up with a filter that is approx 6x11 or 21/2 x11. The latter seems to match the owner’s manual description of it, but there is no tab in the air opening to mount the filter. Does the metal grill that is held in place by a screw to the plastic grill cover have anything to do with the filter? Is that the filter bracket?
I know this post is old, but I have the GE model #JVM2070 microwave, and need to change the charcoal filter, but the screws that are located on top of the unit are inaccessible due to the installers mounting the unit flush w/the cabinet, so that these particular screws are concealed by the underneath of the cabinet. So it looks as though I need to remove the unit from the cabinet above to access these screws, man that seems like alot of work just to change the filter? I did read a post in this thread where the user mentioned something about the screws being long?? On my installation the two outside screws (meaning to the furthest most point right & left) inside the cabinet are pretty short screws and appear to just aide in the securing of the unit to the cabinet. But there is one (and only one) more screw that seems to be doing the heavy work w/regards to securing the unit to the cabinet above…could it be that this is the long screw and I can loosen this enough to be able to drop the unit down and actually access these grille screws. Any assistance would be appreciated. The filter part no. is WB2X10956.
thx,
Hopefully the Installation instructions will help you.
Gene.
Thx for getting back, however for some reason my computer either just won’t open or won’t allow your “installation instructions” link to open? I’ll try a few things on my end, or try from a different computer.
thx,

The other way is to go to the GE appliances web site, choose “Owner’s manuals and Installation instructions” from the drop down menu under “Service & support” tab and type in your model number.

I have the manual for my unit, I was merely trying to confirm whether or not I needed to actually remove the unit from being attached underneath the overhead cabinet in order to change this charcoal filter, just seemed accessive to me to have to go to all of that trouble. I see the pic referring to the installation in the manual, and they’re showing that the screws to loosen the front grille are on top of the unit, but with the way the unit was installed the screws are inaccessible due to the cabinet top is covering them up. I did loosen 2 of the 3 screws securing the microwave to the cabinet, they are very short threaded screws, barely recessed into the top of the unit. But there is also a third screw that appears to be a longer threaded screw do most of the work securing the microwave. So I was wondering if my assumption is correct and that if the third is a long threaded screw will it allow me to back this screw out far enough to drop the microwave (w/o the unit coming completely off of the cabinet its secured too) in order to access the grille screws. That’s what I’m wondering, and the manual really doesn’t confirm that. Actually when I got into looking at the grille area, I see that there never was a charcoal filter ever installed into the unit by the installers. Help if you can.
thx
Well, the most important question is: is your microwave vented out (does it have a vent pipe installed on top of the microwave) or it blows air out through the top grille?
If it is vented out then you do not need to install the charcoal filter at all.
Gene.
I just assumed it was always un-vented, and just released air out the front through the grille. There is no vent pipe going up through the inside of my cabinet, the wall that the cabinet is attached to is an outside wall to the inside of the garage, so not sure how they would vent it, unless they went through the wall and up through the attic, which I doubt. Actually the retailer I bought this appliance from didn’t even install it, my electricians (who were also semi-friends) of mine actually did the install, so I highly doubt that they did some complicated install on this unit. I can only figure that they installed the unit and then saw that the filter needed to be in the grille and weren’t about to uninstall the thing to get this small filter in place, but they never passed on any update/info on to me so I was unaware. Heck, I didn’t even know it needed a filter, (except the grease filter I’ve cleaned underneath). So I think I’ll just have someone in place to hold the unit in case it comes disconnected from the cabinet when I unscrew the screw, hopefully I can drop the unit down far enough to get a filter in there.
This is exactly what I will do in your shoes. Keep us posted.
Gene.
Will do, thx.
