This is likely a bearing issue, and the bearings for your model are a part of the gearcase assembly.

I replaced the gear case assembly, clutch, and belt. It immediately started making some other noise and smells like something burning. Any ideas?

Re-check the drive pulley, splutch, and the belt guard/shield for something rubbing. Ensure all these pieces are fully in place and not loose.
