Maytag washer agitator not working correctly

Please make sure to click on General above and select the correct appliance type first.

Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MVWX655DW1
Main Symptom: Won’t agitate
What happens & when: With normal load of wash when agitation start won’t agitate and there’s a straining noise - not exactly a grinding noise but don’t have a better description for it - and washer shuts off after a few seconds.

If I push the clothes to the side of the tub agitator will move somewhat, not fully in either direction, with less but still some noise and washer remains on.

Spin and drain cycle worked normally, with the load of clothes. Ran it without any clothes in the washer and it seems to agitate normally, without any unusual noises.

Trying to isolate the reason and I thought perhaps an issue with the groves between the agitator plate and the shaft it sits on. There is some rust and signs of ware but if I try to see if I can get it to slip at all by hand I can’t, and the noise isn’t really like a skipping of the groves.

Belt and motor seem fine, which I think is demonstrated by the drain and spin cycle working without issue, and it seeming to operate normally with no clothes in the washer.

Looking at associated parts the thing I see that might come into play is the gear plate. Is there anything I can do to test this to rule it in or out? Might there be something else I should be looking at and considering?

Link to video showing the agitation with clothes pushed to the side of the washer. Again, if the clothes are laying flat as normal for a washer load I hear more of the noise with no signs of actual agitation and the washer will shut off.

There is a drive hub kit under the agitator that is most likely stripping out and would need to be replaced.

Thanks for the suggestion - looks easy enough and a lot easier than the gear case, and at a cost that it’s very much worth a try. I’ll order it now and see if this does it.

That did it. THANKS! The “u clip” was a little tough to get on, ended up cracking the new one trying to get it on so took all the screws out and soap up the old one for some lubrication and was able to get it on. Not sure if there is some trick to getting that on that would have made getting the new one just a little easier. But, hope to not need to worry about that again any time soon
