Maytag Tub Seal Replacement

I’m having difficulty removing the main hub assembly to get to the point where I can put the new seals in. I have removed the inner hub but this does not appear to use the spanner wrench type removal.

I’m at a standstill as to how to remove this.

See attached pictures.

Thanks, Brad

Anyone have any ideas? We are almost out of clothes

See new picture, Is there a metal lock washer to remove? There is no set screw which is what I was expecting…

This does not have slots for a spanner wrench..I’ve turned it and that does not seem to loosen it.

You need the spanner wrench and seal nut tool. Spanner wrench available elsewhere, #35-2968 You may need to block transmission from turning.

Thank you.

Do I need to remove the white gear for the agitator first or does it come off as a unit?

  • Brad

The white part is the seal nut, it must be removed first. It does not drive the agitator, that is driven by the splines on the agitator shaft.

Is there any good way to get this off without buying a $60 tool?

Are they both reverse threaded?

Spanner wrench and hammer is the way we normally do it. They are not reverse thread.

Eric

Well that explains why I turned it clockwise a little bit yesterday and didn’t loosen :o

Thanks for your help, the main problem was that I thought they were reverse threads.

I got everything off using a standard pipe wrench vs. buying a spanner wrench and seal nut tool for $75.

I appreciate the help.
