Maytag refrigerator not cooling

Main Symptom: compressor not running

What happens & when:

This is my in laws fridge. I just know the entire things stopped cooling. I am told that when it is plugged in the compressor does not work. It just ‘stopped’ the other day. It didn’t slowly stop cooling over time, one day it was working, one day everything was warm.

When it is plugged in, it makes no noises of any kind. The lights and everything else works. The ‘fan’ also runs. If he adjusts the thermostat or turns the panel to ‘off’, the fan also turns off. So, it seems like everything is good except for the compressor not running.

I feel like this COULD be a relay. I am very comfortable testing these things, compressors, capacitors and such, I just need to know what to test and what values I am looking for to troubleshoot it. I have a multimeter that can test capacitors and has a clamp on amp meter.

Anyone have any advice? You guys have helped me out of jams more than once!!

In most cases, with the fans running but the unit is not cooling then the compressor is most likely not running. With that being said, the most likely cause will be a start device.
