I have a Maytag A183 Washing Machine. I am pretty sure I need to replace
drain pump. Yesterday, second load got a burnt rubber smell and it was
not draining. It looks like the burnt rubber smell was the belt burning up
from spinning the drum, on spin cycle, heavy since it did not empty.

I unhooked internal drain hose at back of washer, lowered the end into a
bucket and was able to drain the water. So that should mean the drain
line/hoses are not clogged.
When the pump was being spun I could see no signs of any movement inside the pump.
Next I will remove the pump and try looking inside whilst turning it by
hand, to see if impeller is moving.

Am I on the right track so far?

Also a question, it looks like the way the belt is situated the pump turns
all the time. What keeps the water from draining until it is supposed to?
