Maytag MDG8400AWW gas dryer not drying clothes

We have a Maytag MDG8400AWW gas dryer that suddenly stopped drying clothes.

I vacuumed out the vent hose and the back of the dryer and that did not fix the problem.

I then took the front panel off and observed the flame.

When the dryer starts the heating element (flame igniter?) glows bright red and the gas burner flame went on really bright.

But after a few seconds the igniter and flame went out. I pulled out the control knob to turn the dryer off and then back on again.
At this point the igniter glowed for a few seconds but the flame did not go on.

I tried this a few times and it seems that the flame only goes on when you first start the dryer. The igniter goes on everytime you start the dryer but promptly goes off.

I also noticed that when the flame goes out I can hear a click sound first.

We can’t afford a new dryer so any help would be greatly appreciated

I looked around a little and noticed this part was corroded.
Based on the label it appears to be the cycling thermostat

What do you think ?

If you are fairly good at electrical work you could temporarily bypass the high temp thermostat with a jumper wire and see if the problem goes away. This is a temporary measure and should never be left in place . If this does not correct the problem then you possibly have a timer problem and you should call a repair service.
