Maytag front load washer won't turn on

What happens & when:

Machine will not power on. Replaced the control board, came back on and tried a test load. As soon as the locking mechanism closed the machine shut off. No power again. Sounds like faulty door lock but could it have fried the new board?

Based on what you described, yes, a shorted door lock assembly is one of the most likely causes, and it absolutely could have damaged the replacement control board.

The sequence is the biggest clue:

  • Original board replaced because the washer was dead.
  • New board powers the washer up normally.
  • As soon as the control commands the door lock to engage, the washer immediately loses all power.
  • It is now completely dead again.

That points to something on the door lock circuit drawing excessive current or shorting a voltage supply when the lock is energized.

Most likely causes (in order)

  1. Faulty door lock assembly (Most Likely)
    • An internal short in the wax motor/solenoid or lock switch can overload the control board.
    • If the lock shorted while energized, it may have taken out the replacement board.
  2. Damaged door lock wiring harness
    • Inspect the harness from the control to the lock for rubbed-through insulation, pinched wires, or corrosion.
    • Pay close attention where the harness passes through the cabinet.
  3. Replacement control board failed
    • It’s possible the replacement board was defective, but the fact that it failed exactly when the lock energized makes the lock circuit much more suspect.

What to test next

1. Disconnect the door lock.

  • Unplug the washer.
  • Disconnect the door lock connector.
  • Restore power.

If the control now powers up (even if it gives a door lock error), the lock or its wiring is very likely the problem.

2. Inspect the lock connector

Using a multimeter, verify:

If the washer still will not power on with the lock disconnected, measure whether the control board is receiving the proper line voltage.

  • Confirm approximately 120 VAC is reaching the control board.
  • If line voltage is present but the user interface is completely dead, the replacement board was likely damaged.

My recommendation

I would not install another control board until the door lock and wiring have been checked or the door lock has been replaced. Otherwise, if the lock is shorted, it could immediately damage another board.

Because the washer died the instant the lock was energized, I would replace the door lock assembly first, carefully inspect the harness, and only then install another control board if the current one no longer powers up.

The locking mechanism was replaced and everything was testing fine. Turned it on, no error showing but it would not let me do the three button reset to 002. Started a cycle and again blew the fuse on the mother board when I started the cycle as soon as the door locked. Is it in the memory still since I did not run it on the 002 first?

Have you checked all the wiring to ensure there is no grounding issue. It just seems really strange that even though you changed the lock module it still blew the fuse. That leads me to believe it is something outside of the control board or lock module

No — not running 002/reset first would not cause the fuse on the control board to blow. Stored errors or configuration memory can prevent normal operation or cause error codes, but they won’t create the electrical short necessary to open a board fuse.

On the Maytag MHW6630HW0, the important clue is that the failure happens right when the door locks / cycle starts, and it has happened to more than one control board. That strongly suggests something external to the control is overloading or shorting the board.

Since you’ve already replaced the door-lock assembly, I would check the door-lock wiring harness very carefully, especially from the lock back to the ACU. Look for a pinched/rubbed wire, moisture, damaged connector, backed-out terminal, or a wire shorted to chassis. Don’t install another board until that circuit is checked, because another board could be damaged the same way.

A useful isolation test is to disconnect the door-lock assembly from the harness, install/repair the control as appropriate, and command a cycle. It obviously won’t run and should generate a door-lock-related fault, but the board fuse should remain intact. If it does, concentrate on the lock circuit/lock wiring. If the board still loses its fuse when Start is commanded with the lock disconnected, the short is elsewhere on a load energized at cycle startup.

Also check the replacement lock’s part number and connector pinout against the model/serial. A new lock can still be defective, and an incorrect/superseded part with a wiring/pin issue can produce exactly this sort of repeat failure.

Bottom line: I would not blame the 002 procedure or stored memory. Two boards blowing their fuse at essentially the same point in the sequence = find the short/overcurrent before replacing another ACU.

-The wire harness to the lock has been checked, but even if I am not seeing any visual problems, could this maybe still need to be replaced?

-Could the strike be an issue if not lined up properly?
