Maytag Dryer Drum Won't Turn

When you push the start button, the motor makes a clattering sound and the drum will not turn. It almost seems like the pulley for the drive belt is not turning with the motor. Is that a possibility?

you may have to take front off of dryer . i believe something has fallen in your blower fan assembly. you can try to take out lint screen and look down housing and see if you see anything but chances are you will have to take front off of dryer

Could also be that the belt has broken and is somehow wrapped around the motor pulley.

Do you have exhaust as the motor also drives the blower wheel.

Here is the parts breakdown.

i’m about ready to flip my lid… have maytag 3000 series front loader washer/dryer… the washer’s been acting up throwing f11 codes.. now the dryer, when you press the start button, the motor hums.. but drum doesn’t spin !!! ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

these are 2 years old!

i found that if i open the dryer door, hold my finger on the door switch, press the dryer ON , and manual give the drum a little nudge.. it starts to spin fine

i’m at a loss for words…

Try manually rotating the drum in the correct direction. It should turn fairly easily.
If it does then you probably need a new motor.

ok… if i open the door like i said, and hold in the “door switch”
i press the dryer start button… the motor still hums… but no tumble
i reach in and can give the drum a little nudge and the dryer starts tumbling fine

i took off the front bottom access panel, and I could see the belt barely
but couldn’t tell that it was broke or off a pulley

i’m assuming the belt isn’t broke… if the dryer tumbles once i give it a manual nudge with my hand

could it just be off a pulley or something ?
i’m going to take the back off (i’m assuming that’s the best way to get to the belt) and take a look

do i need any special tools to remove a belt and put it back on ?

also… if i do take the belt off and try to run the dryer… if the motor turns fine… does that mean the motor is still ok ? and it could just be a belt ?

You are correct.

No, if it is off the pulley the drum will never rotate.

No

also… if i do take the belt off and try to run the dryer… if the motor turns fine… does that mean the motor is still ok ?
No. With no load the motor may start.
You have to be careful running it while apart as no air will be pulled across the heating coil so you may blow the thermal cut-off.
If you want to do this make sure the unit is in an air only mode.

I doubt it.

thanks for your replies…

sounds like motor bad then ?

Yes, that would be at the top of my list.

Before ordering one I would check just to be sure a wire has not come off at the motor.

so frustrated with these 2 maytags… our previous set was just old clunkers.. but they worked for years and years and years… so we splurged and got these… now both the washer and dryer are acting up

is the best way to get to the motor… is by removing the back of the dryer? i didn’t jot down the exact model number.. it is a maytag series 3000 performance dryer

when i had the lower front access panel off my dryer late last nite.. just looking to see if i could see a belt problem … i reached my hand back and felt the belt… how much “play” should be in the belt ? when I touched it i seemed to be able to move it up and down pretty easily, but I wasn’t sure if that much “play” was normal ?

To get at the motor you usually have tpo take off the front.

hard to say how much tension the belt should have.
What you think is low tension I might think is medium or high tension.
If the belt is not slipping on the pulley or drum the tension is correct.

ok… here’s what i just tried:
(i can see why service calls are so much … cause it’s a pain in the rump just to take the dang dryer apart… atleast for me it was)

i removed the lower front panel…
removed the blower cover, the blower fan turns free, no obstructions

i removed the rear of the dryer
i disconnected all the electronic connections i could see, and replugged them back in
i checked the belt, belt looks fine
i removed the belt from the pulley/motor and the motor moves fine and easily if i turn the motor shaft by hand

the pulley and the motor shaft don’t look worn or anything

i put the belt back on, and ran an air only cycle (so not to burn it up)
the motor hums, but doesn’t have enough gusto to turn anything

i took my hand, while the dryer was still on , and manually rotated the drum a little to get it started… it started and moved, but if i put any bit of load on the drum (i just pushed down on it with my hand while it was rotating, the motor stops and just sits there and hums)

it seems to me like when the dryer is powerd on… and the drum wasn’t moving
(when i had the rear and top off the dryer) i could take my hand and pull up on the belt
i looked down and the shaft was moving… but belt wasn’t acting tight enough to grab or something…

but when the power is off… the belt is on there snug…

You are welcome

And thanks for getting back to us. Now when others search for a similar problem they will see what actually worked instead of just suggestions about what could be the cause.
