1st problem is the drive belt burnt at the small pully side and broke from a freeze up or something.
Put a ribbed type auto belt on that we matched to see if the tranny blew or if it still spins. It spins and agatates.
Now getting Very Loud screeching when it starts to spin and continues until it reaches full speed - then gone.
Also If I put some pressure pushing the motor back is is not as loud, still screeches but reaches full speed quicker
Brakes fine and quiet.
Machine has a metal drive pully and it Sounds like metal on metal at the bottom of machine.
No metal filings under the machine.
Occosional burst of the same screech during wash / agatate/ rinse cycle.
Completes full wash cycle and runs pretty good but the screeching sounds like it’s gonna blow up!
Helpl I want to fix it, 20 years new and counting.
Thanks.
Everything you say points to a transmission problem, and everything else points to replacing it. You have had a tremendous run with the machine, far longer than it normally goes. Time to say thank you to it and move on.
Thanks.
What else could it be if it’s not the tranny?
Reason why I ask is that the machine does the complete wash cycle. just noisy at low and medium spin speed. No screeching noise at full
spin speed.
Is it possible it’s the lower bearing allowing the drive pully to hit the clutch/brake assembly?
Is there 1 or 2 bearings at the bottom of the shaft above the drive pully?
Easy to change?
Don’t mind spending a hundred or 2 and a couple of hours to fix it.
Thanks again for your help.
You first post implied the noise happened in the agitate part of the cycle. Now it sounds like maybe it is confined to the spin cycle. If so, the bearings could be the problem.
It is a doable, but not an easy repair. Also, I cannot link you to a service manual because Maytag will not make that info available any more. See if you can obtain a free download, or even pay a few bucks for a service manual and you can see if you want to tackle the repair.
Good luck
